My approach is largely humanistic/ Gestalt, and centres around how we may sit comfortably with our authentic selves (not trying to be someone we are not) and living in the present ( not wholly governed by past experience, or over- invested in the unknown events of the future).
I believe that we are all born with the capacity to live happy lives and be the best versions of ourselves, yet events that happen throughout our lives can make this seem difficult at times. However, although these events have happened to us, they do not define who we are. Ultimately, humans are relational beings and it is how we relate to those around us, our environment, the past, our learned belief systems, and societal expectations that help us make sense of the world. In the ever changing world in which we live, our tools to cope can often become outdated - individual therapy creates the framework to explore this together at your pace.
Within our sessions we might explore the past and the way it relates to how you may be experiencing the present, and consider your current environment and the way in which your behaviour patterns are serving you. We may look also at your previous relationships and how they might have influenced your relationship templates in later life.
Additionally we will listen to the body - what do you feel as you read this? Is there tension manifesting somewhere? Is there a part of your body that is drawing your attention? Often it is the physical sensations that we experience that informs us how we feel and consequently think.
As your counsellor I endeavour to learn what it is like to be you, in order that you feel understood and heard. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space for you to explore and reconnect with your authentic self.
